Gliese 1214 b is an exoplanet that orbits the star Gliese 1214. This planet is usually called GJ 1214 for short, but the majority of the public refer to this GJ1214b, shown in this artist's view, is a super-Earth orbiting a red dwarf star 40 light-years from Earth. New observations from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope show that it is a waterworld enshrouded by a thick, steamy atmosphere. The discovery is based on the planet GJ 1214b, which appears hot, wet and “GJ1214b is quite close to Earth, just 42 light years away, and it orbits its star in just 1.6 days.” That fast orbit gave scientists the opportunity to record the exoplanet’s flat spectrum, ruling out an atmosphere of simple hydrogen, water, carbon dioxide or methane.
